What does CL mean to you?

My story is a testimony of God’s grace, His perfect timing, and the importance of fully surrendering my heart to Christ. When I first joined CL, I was a recovering legalistic Christian. I wanted to walk the right steps and do all the right things, but I was also struggling with rejection and identity on the inside. I turned to pornography and masturbation as a way to medicate my perfectionism. Through Changing Lanes, I began understanding what a true heart change looked like.

I started dating my girlfriend Sara about the time I began Changing Lanes. My heart change began in August 2021 when two men, Brett and Dallas, challenged me to postpone my engagement to Sara until I had embraced full surrender of my desires and plans to God. I had already planned the engagement with the family and everything, but God was clearly challenging me to set that aside. I was so mad at Brett and Dallas! But I knew they were right.

Over time through Changing Lanes, God revealed to me when I was ready to propose to Sara. Looking back, giving God control of my life, my identity, my sins, and my plans helped me to desire God more than my sin. He demonstrated to me the same grace and mercy I wanted to show Sara.

Earlier that year, I wrote in my journal:

“Looking back, I am grateful for the advice and counsel Brett and the group gave me. If pushing the proposal means a lifetime of joy, then so be it. I need to seriously consider the man I want to be and the husband I want to be for Sara. It’s time to do the work. It’s time to give myself as a living sacrifice to Him, and have my relationship with Sara in an open hand to Christ.”

I would not have become the man I am today if it hadn’t been for Changing Lanes. I am extremely grateful for the tools and love they gave me. I have been completely sober since CL. I am currently involved with Changing Lanes as a leader. This ministry means everything to me, and it offers a community that is a true reflection of Christ.

I chose a photo of Sara and me from our wedding as a symbol of God’s grace, mercy, and a reminder that I am His.

What advice do you have for future CL men?

It is easy to think that CL is just another formula to find success or achieve your goals. But CL is so much more. Regardless of the outcome of my relationship with Sara, God was still sovereign, and He still loved me. The heart change comes from fully surrounding your life and desires towards God’s will regardless of the outcome.

I would encourage future men to embrace the challenge of full surrender and heart change. Don't be afraid of it. CL was one of the hardest things I have done in my life, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world now. I am so grateful for the intimacy I have with Christ as a result.
